Professional Screenwriting Software for the Web

Scriptwriter Pro is the most advanced browser-based screenwriting software used by both novices and professionals for writing all forms of motion picture projects, from low budget indie projects to scripted YouTube videos, student films to blockbusters, and beyond.
It features support for Fountain, tools for outlining and navigating, along with industry-standard screenplay formatting and advanced features for managing rewrited and revisions without all of the hassle.
“Why do I need Scriptwriter Pro?”
Because you’re an indie filmmaker or a student–and money is tight. You could use other programs which may have the same features as Scriptwriter Pro, but they will cost you a pretty penny—$80 to $250—which could be a huge chunck of change for you! Certain versions of those programs may even be one of those dreaded yearly or monthly subscriptions 😱.
But even if you are a professional, you should still have access to high-quality screenwriting features and resources without having to worry about limited demo versions or paying exorbitant amounts of money when the same (or better) quality is available for free!
What’s more, you don’t have to worry about disk space–Scriptwriter Pro runs completely in your browser!

Features
Scriptwriter Pro is a complete service for writing motion picture screenplays and video scripts, including tools for outlining and navigating, along with industry-standard screenplay formatting and advanced features for managing rewrited and revisions without all of the hassle.
The same look, no matter where you are
Scriptwriter Pro has a universal, sleek, and easy-to-use user interface. It does everything you’d need and want of your screenwriting software, and it does it on all modern browsers (i.e., Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc.) and all modern operating systems (i.e., Microsoft Windows 10/11, macOS Golden Gate, Linux, etc.)
Industry-standard formatting
Scriptwriter Pro automatically takes care of the screenplay formatting for you, intelligently switching between scene headings and action, characters and dialogue, transitions and more while you type. If you don’t agree with the element, just tab or shift+tab your way through the styles until you find the right one for the job. It includes all of the formatting styles you need and want:
- Scene headings
- Actions
- Character Names
- Parentheticals
- Dialogue
- Transitions
- & Shots
Along with text stylizing like bold, italic, and underline. You can even add scene numbers, create simultaneous dialogue, prepare your scripts for double-sided printing, easly customize the title page, and so so much more.
Autocomplete & QuickSuggestions
Scriptwriter Pro keeps track of your previously used locations and characters to provide accurate and project-specific autocomplete suggestions so you don’t lose time re-typing them out over and over again. The less time it takes for you to put pen to paper, the more time you have to put film to screen.
Navigation that knows your screenplay like you know the back of your own hand
Scriptwriter Pro organizes all of your scenes in chronological order, from beginning to end, and helps you navigate your scenes without having to scroll for hours through hundreds of pages. You can even see which characters have the most screentime as Scriptwriter Pro tracks how many lines each character is given.
Easy revisions
Scriptwriter Pro recognizes that writing is a process; things are added, removed, and changed all the time. To better manage these different rewrites and revisions, Scriptwriter Pro allows you to record revisions, quickly see changes, and export scripts with revised pages highlighted.

Fonts
Scriptwriter Pro has several custom open source screenplay fonts for you to choose from, all of which were designed to be metrically-compatible or stylistically similar to other fonts available on your operating system or from other screenwriting software. These fonts include:
- Courier Script (a Courier Screenplay replacement & default font)
- Courain (a Courier Final Draft replacement)
- Courier Prime (from Quote-Unquote Apps)
- Courier Now (a Courier New replacement)
You can download the above mentioned families here. Be sure to read and understand the included licenses before you use these families.
Templates

SDK
The custom Scriptwriter Pro save files (.scriptwriterx) is a JSON-based format and is therefore easily integrable with other apps and very human-readable. You can easily open any of these files in the text editor of your choice to read and edit them outside of Scriptwriter Pro.
Support
Below is a list of frequently asked questions.
How do I get Scriptwriter Pro?
Scriptwriter Pro is available for the web.
Will it work on my browser?
Scriptwriter Pro is accessible on any modern operating systems (like Microsoft Windows 10/11, macOS Golden Gate, or Linux) that run any modern browsers that support modern HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript (like Google Chrome, Firefox, or Safari).
What is the difference between Scriptwriter Pro and other screenwriting software?
Scriptwriter Pro is a completely free screenwriting platform that works directly in your browser. Other software take up not-insignificant portions of your hard drive's disk space and may have a free trial before you have to pay or a limited free tier, but Scriptwriter Pro is (and always will be) free of charge, no matter who you are. Scriptwriter Pro has all of the same features as the other screenwriting platforms and more.
Do I need to register for an account?
No.
Are updates automatic?
Yes. When we push an update, all instances of Scriptwriter Pro automatically update upon refreshing the page. Any drafts stored in your browser will remain intact and accessible and all versions are backwardly-compatible with each other, meaning the newest version of Scriptwriter Pro will still support legacy features (but old versions may not support newer features).
If you or your business wish to license a specific version of Scriptwriter Pro, please feel free to get in touch. We’d be happy to help!
How do I know if I have the latest version?
The current version is Alpha 3.7
Here are the latest fixes, features, improvements, and tweaks:
- Alpha 3.7 — Fixed editing capabilities.
Can I use it on more than one browser?
Yes, definetly. But there are some caveats. You can transfer .scriptwriterx and .fountain files between browsers with no issue. Just download the file and open them in your other browser. However, local drafts (i.e., ones saved to your browser’s storage) will not be transferred between browsers.
Scriptwriter Pro does not currently support collaborative editing, so documents can not be shared and edited live between multiple browsers.
What font should I use?
For scripts, it’s recommended to use a screenplay-specific Courier or Courier-like font (namely one that is monospaced). Scriptwriter Pro comes with five fonts for you to choose from:
- Courier Script (a Courier Screenplay replacement & default font)
- Courain (a Courier Final Draft replacement)
- Courier Prime (from Quote-Unquote Apps)
- Courier Now (a Courier New replacement)
- Preshoot Elite (a Prestige Elite replacement)
- Courier New (system font)
The first four fonts (Courier Script through Courier Now) are available for download separately in the Extras section. You cannot currently upload your own fonts.
Does it work with other screenplay files?
Partially, yes. Scriptwriter Pro supports the Fountain format. Certain Scriptwriter Pro-specific features like color-page revisions will not be available outside of .scriptwriterx files (the custom file format for Scriptwriter Pro scripts).
